The Clarence City Band has an extensive development program, which caters for players of varying ages (10 years and older), ability and backgrounds – from absolute beginners, through to people wishing to improve their skills, or even returning to instrumental playing after an extended break. Our training programs utilise the Tradition of Excellence books to teach music theory, music history, ear training, listening, and creativity through a performance-based approach.
The development program pathway is designed to allow players to move through to more advanced bands when they are ready to do so. The end goal for many is to be able to play with the most advanced performance ensembles, such as the Clarence City Concert Band.
The Beginner Band is the first step in the Development Program. It commences in March each year with a weekend workshop, followed by weekly two-hour rehearsals. Find out more about the Beginner Band here.
Level 2 Band
The Level 2 Band comprises people from the previous year’s Beginner Band as well as any other people who have acquired basic instrumental skills in another situation and wish to develop them further within a group learning context.
This band performs several times throughout the year, alongside our other development program bands, at our “at home” concerts at the Lindisfarne Citizens Activity Centre (LCAC), Lincoln Street, Lindisfarne.
Intermediate Band (formerly Level 3 Band)
For those members who have successfully completed the Beginner Program, the Intermediate Band is the place to focus on ensemble skills development and refinement, by primarily focusing on Level 1.5 to 2 concert band pieces. Book 3 (Green Book) of the Tradition of Excellence series is used as part of weekly drill activities.
The Intermediate Band is an entry point for returning players and caters for players who find music in Symphonic Band too difficult / too demanding.
Symphonic Band (formerly Transition Band)
The Symphonic Band is the final stage of the Development Program. Its prime purpose is to help players develop sufficient skills to be able to join one of Clarence City Band’s performance ensembles, by focusing on Level 2 to Level 3 concert band pieces.
The Symphonic Band takes part in several performances throughout the year, including At Home concerts, school fairs, and other community events. The band participates in local eisteddfods and the Tasmanian Bands League (TBL) State Championships at D Grade level.
